When Jimmy sells his card to a memorabilia store, the place is burgled by two small-time thieves and the detective loses his card. They track down the thieves.

I don't know what the hell is wrong with you haters, you don't expect a serious comedy movie when Tracy Morgan is in it's hilarious,i laughed my head off. You all just keep saying what fans blah blah blah bunch of f**king movie nerds,saying the plots are stupid the acting is bad,well, tracy morgan is in it, if there are good acting, the movie will be underrated any way , so is that really important? it's a comedy movie ppl,wake the f**k up. want a goofy time? best freaking choice.it just doesn't make sense while the transformers have higher scores,when their plots are much much slower,the acting is much more worse, and they got 6.3.but in this COMEDY MOVIE,which do NOT have to be serious about,some stupid wieners come out and say OH THE ACTING/SOUNDTRACK/PLOTS, why don't you boring f**ks just GTFO,and let the ppl have some laughs
Jimmy and Paul are partners on the job and, although unconventional, they do work well together. When both are suspended pending an investigation into an operation gone wrong, Jimmy decides the only way he&#39;ll be able to raise the money he needs to pay for his daughter&#39;s wedding is to sell a rare baseball card he has owned since childhood. When the store he goes to auction it from is robbed, Jimmy&#39;s card goes missing and winds up in the hands of a local drug lord. Desperate to get it back, the pair agree to do a legal job for Raul, finding a car of his that was recently stolen.<br/><br/>This film didn&#39;t get particularly good reviews when it came out but I do like Morgan&#39;s delivery (albeit the same every time) so I decided to give it a go anyway. For the most part we are in very familiar territory as it is a genre film and even the music seems to be placed to reference the heyday of this genre (late 1980&#39;s, early 90&#39;s). The plot moves along with what you expect it to do and it never really threatens to be a good story that has much telling behind it. This I can live with because it does rather come with the territory with this sort of film and I normally don&#39;t mind it because the genre is quite easy fun and has solid action to it – I still love Running Scared for this very reason.<br/><br/>Sadly this is where Cop Out falls down because it simply is never as much fun nor as funny as it needs to be. In specific moments it is funny and I did laugh several times across the film, but the good bits were spread a little too thin and the rest of the material just didn&#39;t seem to work. I can understand the &quot;daughter getting married&quot; as a plot device, but too much actual time was spent on it considering that it didn&#39;t add much to my enjoyment of the film. For example a dinner scene with Jimmy and his family is not funny, adds very little to the actual narrative and goes on too long for this to be the case. The most surprising thing for me is how little the film uses Morgan. I know he is not to everyone&#39;s taste but his standard personae is funny when he is given the material and the time to do his thing, so quite why the film seems to only let him do that a handful of times is beyond me. The lack of consistent laughs from Morgan is made more noticeable because Willis is practically a comedy black-hole here. I&#39;m not sure what direction (if any) he was given but he mostly seems pained by this project and when he does raise himself it feels forced (which of course it is).<br/><br/>With both of his lead actors failing to deliver, one does have to look to Smith to see what he was doing. 30 Rock makes perfect use of Morgan but somehow Smith fudges it, likewise Willis can have the spark he once did at times but again Smith cannot get anywhere near it. Nor can he keep a consistent tone – a good comedy can have you smiling or smirking even when it is not actively being funny, because generally you don&#39;t have time to clear your face from the last laugh before the next one comes. With Cop Out it is the opposite situation as the odd funny scenes are welcomed in a load of ones that only drive narrative but don&#39;t deliver laughs. Smith also wastes Pollak and Brody while allowing Hernández just to ham it up and Reguera to be pretty (and attracted to Morgan for no discernible reason or benefit to the film). I like Jones but mostly her subplot is weak while Lee and Essman are wasted and out of place. Weirdly I thought that Scott was out of place as a character but he was one of the few aspects of the film that made me chuckle with any regularity and he did seem to produce good scenes with Morgan.<br/><br/>Cop Out wants to be a fun and funny buddy cop movie but, while it has some funny moments, it never really gets close with any degree of consistency. The script is no great shakes but Smith is mostly to blame as he fails to get much out of his cast and directs scenes with seemingly no idea how to make them work to produce laughs or to prevent the film being very bumpy and uneven. So-so if you&#39;re in an in undemanding mood but there are so many more enjoyable films in this genre that there is no real reason to bother with Cop Out.

In his stand-up TV special &quot;Too Fat for 40&quot; he stated that he was essentially taking a break from writing as he tried to figure out why some of his more recent movies (namely &quot;Zack and Miri Make a Porno&quot;) weren&#39;t doing as well. He realized his life circumstances had changed from the days of &quot;Clerks&quot; and &quot;Mallrats&quot; and that to try to write a movie like that at this stage of his life wouldn&#39;t be honest. He liked the script for &quot;A Couple of Dicks&quot; (the original and working title of &quot;Cop Out&quot;) and loved growing up watching buddy cop movies with his dad. <a href="/name/nm0005134/">Jason Lee</a>, who frequently works with Smith, appears in a brief (two scene) role as the step-father of Jimmy Monroe (<a href="/name/nm0000246/">Bruce Willis</a>)&#39;s daughter. <a href="/name/nm0005405/">Seann William Scott</a>, <a href="/name/nm0605079/">Tracy Morgan</a>, and <a href="/name/nm0640756/">Ernest O&#39;Donnell</a> appear in this film as well.
